How & Why Are We Here?
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: God Matters
A short musing, comprising several threads By Paul Quek

At one time or another, most of us probably have wondered about the "how" and "why" of our existence on this planet we call Earth. ... read on

Here are some notes/excerpts from Sten F. Odenwald's "The Astronomy Cafe" (Revised on 20 January 2008). Check out God & the Wonderland Universe (Incept date: 24 January 2008; revision: 27 January 2008).

For a Christian who studies the Old Testament (and the Apocrypha or "Deuterocanonical", in the case of a Roman Catholic), it may be useful to study the source for these texts. The source is, of course, The Hebrew Bible & Jewish Apocrypha -- work-in-progress as @ 24 January 2008 -- CLICK HERE.

A "non-exclusivist" Christian
Mood:  bright
Topic: God Matters

Some 1.8 years ago, I re-read Marcus Borg (ed.)'s "Jesus and Buddha", which bears the sub-title "The Parallel Sayings" (Berkeley, California: Ulysses Press, 1997). What benefits did I get from reading it?

Well, if nothing else, I have at least considered adopting -- in fact, did adopt, privately -- the label "non-exclusivist Christian" to describe myself to some non-Christians (aiyah!, my true-blue Christian friends will NEVER understand -- unless God does a miracle in their hearts), simply because it's a more expansive, more flexible and less insulting stance ... that is, if one needs a label or a stance!

Here's what Marcus Borg (editor) says in "Jesus and Buddha":

As a Christian, I have lived with Jesus all my life. I have not lived with the Buddha. In adulthood, I have become a non-exclusivist Christian. It seems clear that 'the sacred' has been known in all of the major religious traditions, and I do not think that Christianity is the only adequate religion, even though it is my 'home'."

Thanks again, Marcus Borg!

Have fun!

Cheers!

Halleluyah (Praise "the LORD our God" / Praise "YAHWEH our Father")!

"Cube" (1997 Movie from Canada) - An Interesting Comment
Mood:  chillin'
Topic: Secular
Decided to revisit that 1997 made-in-Canada movie "Cube" that is quite unique in the scifi genre (especially, given its low production budget) and which also impacted many (raising many interesting questions) ...

Here's an interesting viewer's comment about "Cube" vis-a-vis "real", everyday work-life ... read more.

Have fun!

(1) Happy CNY 2008; (2) Avant Browser (Freeware)
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Secular

[ This post was made originally on  the morning of 7 February 2008, at about 8.45 am., at another blog of mine known as "Personal Log" - Paul's Free Blog @ Tripod.com (paul-quek) ]"

This is the SECOND day of this New Year on the Chinese Calendar ...

Of course, it's not the year 2008 on the Chinese Calendar, nor is today 8th of February on this Calendar ... It is, of course, the 2nd Day of the 1st Lunar Month -- and this year is the Year of the Rat, based on the Chinese Zodiac. (Get this: "Full of charm, the Rat is the object of admiration. A true sentimentalist, family and friends are close to their heart. Their intellect and foresight bring success with money and work. Rats are constant seekers of new ventures and travel. Compatible with the Ox, Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Monkey and Dog." -- says the Amazon website on Asian Zodiac Poster Year of the Rat: Birth Years 1912 1924 1936 1948 1960 1972 1984 1996 2008).

But it's OK, we Chinese in Singapore still uses the Gregorian (Western) Calendar just like most of the countries in the world (or in the United Nations?) ...

Anyway, it's appropriate to wish one and all, "Welcome to a Happy & Blessed Chinese New Year (CNY) 2008! And thank you to everyone (especially God, first as always!), for everything!"

Now, in this post, I also wanted to start off the CNY with a "Thank You" note to Anderson Che (and others?) who gave us the Avant Browser (now "Version 11.5 build 21", according to the "About" box)  ...

If you are game enough to try it, here are the details from Anderson Che:

A New Blog -- "Paul's Free Blog @ Tripod.com (paulquek888)"
Mood:  a-ok
That website started its first incarnation sometime in 1999 or so -- Sorry, must be getting really old -- can't seem to recall those days! They seem like so farrrrrrrr awayyyyyyy ...

This is my new blog, entitled "Paul's Free Blog @ Tripod.com (paulquek888)", bearing the URL https://paulquek888.tripod.com/blog/ (in case you are reading a hardcopy-printout of this page) ...

This blog is closely associated with "Paul's Free Website (Version 1.0) @ Tripod.com", which itself has the URL https://paulquek888.tripod.com/ and was actually one of my first websites, started way back in the last years of the last century.

While I have begun to re-construct the https://paulquek888.tripod.com/ website, I have kept, for archive purpose, a copy at another URL, namely http://queksiewkhoon.tripod.com/ ...

Anyway, it was a general website whereby I experimented hard-coding with the "hypertext markup language", or HTML.

But as is the usual case, that single monolithic website evolved into several multifarious and specialised websites, including "Paul's Free E-Scrapbook" and sites on "thoughts-and-things", zen, scanned images (playing around with handheld as well as flatbed scanners), computers, angels, spiritual warfare, fave quotes, and so on and so forth.

This is the way evolution works: a single entity mutating into several entities due to various interests, influences and pressures. After all, in the world of the Internet (or 'Net), one's interests easily expand into many directions, branches and realms, for the 'Net is a humongous storehouse of readily-retrievable data and information, both textual and multimedia (images, media/audio, video, etc.), including software and code.

Then, also, the number of permutations and combinations of the changes and mutations tend to multiply and explode, until eventually the whole set of websites, blogs and other so-called "web objects" tend to take on a form of emergent quality -- much like "mind" is an "emergent property" of the complex conglomerate of brain cells (neurons) and connections among the dendrites, except that the level of complexity required for a truly "emergent property" has yet to manifest in the case of the entirety of websites, blogs and other web objects.

The emergence and introduction of numerous new technologies, both 'Net-related and otherwise (including in communications and electronics) -- such as is obvious from the convergence of, say, communication technology (e.g., in personal communication devices such as cellular phones), broadcast technology (e.g., TV with Internet capability/connectivity; and personal computers with TV connectivity), in electonics (e.g., digital camera, digital music), and many, many areas -- also contributed to the proliferation of "web objects" (especially in the realms of audio and video), including my share of these in my websites and blogs and what-not's.

Naturally, today's high level of interactivity on the Internet has led to the so-called Net 2.0 phenomenon, especially in the area of "social networking". This has continued to change the face of the internet, starting with the proliferation of email communication (perhaps to rival "snail mail"), blogs (or weblogs), community portals (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, PerfSpot), peer-to-peer networking (of which Napster was an early portend of things to come -- and perhaps to end?), online gaming, uploadable audio-video depositories (e.g., YouTube, Flickr, Webshots' "community photos" section), and the like.

All in all, one can easily say that the 'Net has so far been an interesting and fascinating journey and -- despite the increase in the level of commitment required to maintain the websites and blogs and what-not's -- the 'Net promises to continue to remain interesting and fascinating. The future suggests, portends, and beckons with more and more of the new and newer!

    'Nuff said!

Have fun!

Cheers!

Halleluyah (Praise "the LORD our God" / Praise "YAHWEH our Father")!
